How to feed the patient through a nasal-gastric tube

If the patient is not able to swallow his food and drugs naturally, a nasal-gastric tube

can be as a passage of nutrition to the patient. His nutrition depends on your care and feeding.

Prepare—

Water, liquid diet , feeding syringe, face towel, tissue papers.

Food prepare---

1. If the food is prepares per day ,you can feed and heat 250㏄ to 300㏄.

each feeding time.

1. If the food is power type, prepare only suitable amount each feeding time. If cann’t, the remains are placed in the refrigerator.
2. The food must be warm at about 38~40 ℃ .
3. Wash your hand with soap and water.
4. Prepare the diet , select a clean and sanitize surroundings.
5. Before feeding, crank up the bed to 45 degree. One hour after feeding, return the bed to the flat position.
6. Place a bib under the chin. To keep the patient and bed clean.
7. Before feeding, Please check the position of nasal-gastric tube, It is fix on 55-65cm.
8. If part of N-G tube outside is more than 10cm behind the marked line. Then the tube must be reinserted. If the part of N-G tube outside is under than10cm check the mouth of the patient, if no tube kinking, To push it gently to the origin position and fixed it. Then you must be withdraw the stomach contents for be sure position.
9. Before every feeding, withdraw the stomach contents to check the condition of digestion. If the amount is more than 120㏄,then pump it back and wait 30~60 minutes before checking again. If digestion is complete, then you can continue with feeding.
10. When you are feeding the patient, please roll and milk the tube to allow the food residue in the tube to flow down, Then add 50㏄ water to the syringe to flush clean the tube.

Feeding ---

9.The poison of the syringe and funnel must be above the abdomen about 30~45cm high, and the feeding time should not too fast.

1. Close the tip of the catheter.
2. Record the feeding amount and time.

11.In the morning 30minutes after feeding, massage the abdomen to help with the bowel movement. It can prevent constipation.
